FreeNas – IT Living Lab

Throughout the duration of this project the student installed FreeNas. FreeNAS stands for free Network Attached Storage. The students began by using a laptop, a keyboard, a mouse, and a CD with the download. When the students tried to boot from the CD to do install FreeNAS, it always crashed. They tried burning a new CD, but it still crashed. After doing some research they discovered that the problem was the USB keyboard they were using. The team switched to a PS/2 keyboard and was able to install FreeNAS successfully. The next step was to configure iSCSI service. The team located a guideline from the FreeNAS website and used it to install the iSCSI. The students then installed FreeNAS on two hard drives that were provided by the instructor.

Living Lab has been a great experience for me to learn daily obligations to maintain a healthy network. I’ve learned independent research is a very important process before network testing is conducted. I’ve also learned that you must have a process to monitor packets flowing in and out of the network. The Living Lab has given me the chance to work on a project that I have yet to encounter in my six years of IT experience. FreeNAS is an open-source, Linux based freeBSD, network storage operating system. It can be installed on virtually any hardware platform that allows it to share data over a network. The Living Lab has been very educational for me this semester. I gained experience in collaborating with a client in order to install a Polycom Videoconferencing system, to provide a new way of communication for the client. Paul D. Bailey

I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up for the Living Lab. It has been a long and difficult journey this semester, but I got hands-on experience with Linux. I hoped to cover more networking material, but setting up an intrusion detection system and troubleshooting commands did make this seemingly impossible task for a student with no prior experience more approachable. I have definitely determined that this class could be just like a real life IT position. You never know how long a project might take, even a simple task. I’ve had some tasks take only a couple of hours, and I worked on one project for 36 hours straight. But I feel that Living Lab is helping to prepare me for what will come in the professional world.
