Students installed a touch screen computer which will allow the users to check in and out through the use of a database created in Filemaker. In order to set up the database it was important for the students to understand how the network is set up. The client’s network is made up of 2VLANS, one office network and one public network, 1AT&T 2 wire modem, 1 switch, 1 WAP, 1 network multifunction printer, clients computers that were running Windows XP Service Pack 3, and a Dell Dimension 3000 that is running Windows Small Business Server 2003. Upon understand how IYG’s network was configured, the students then chose to host the Filemaker database on the server. That being said the students were then responsible for selecting a touch screen computer to purchase for the not-for-profit. In the end they decided on a Dell Inspiron One 2305, and the students were able to use the computer’s terminal to access the “check-in” program that is stored on the server.
Students also spent time this semester troubleshooting any IT issues that occurred. One of these issues was to update the QuickBooks software that is installed on the end user machines. Within QuickBooks pro there is a server side and a client side. The server side is responsible for hosting the data that the clients connect to, and then the client side connects all of the data sources and allows them to connect to the data on the server. In order to update the software on the end user machines software patches and updates were installed on both the server and the clients. Aside from Quickbooks, the students also installed and updated Filemaker Pro, LogMeIn, and IPcop.
